Tom Brown's School Museum
The museum is open from Easter to October every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from 2pm to 5pm.
Situated in the heart of the village close to the 12th century St Mary's Church in the village of Uffington, this tiny and unusual museum has an interesting history. Thomas Hughes was born in Uffington and wrote the famous book ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’ which features the Old Schoolroom which now houses the museum. The building was founded 400 years ago by Thomas Saunders as a school for 12 'worthy boys' and became a museum in 1984.
The permanent exhibition explains the history and archaeology of the area including the world-famous Uffington White Horse and has displays on Thomas Saunders and Thomas Hughes together with John Betjeman who lived in the village for over 10 years. There is also a mock Victorian schoolroom which shows what schooling was like in the late 19th/early 20th century.
Every year the temporary exhibition is updated with an element of local history - previous displays have celebrated 400 years of education in Uffington and the commemoration of 20 local men who lost their lives in WWI. For 2021 we are exhibiting the winning entries from our photographic competition 'Valuing Our Environment'.
Entry to the museum is free, however donations are welcomed as all activities are undertaken by volunteers.

Please note that there is no running water in the 400 year old buidling so the nearest toilets are located in the church or the pub.

Entry to the museum is free although donations are welcomed. Mid week out of hours group visits are also available subject to a fee of £2.00 per person minimum £20.00. Please contact the curator to arrange.
