The Sweatbox is an open access youth centre for young people aged 11-19 based on King Alfreds Academy Centre site. It consists of an American diner style coffee bar area with a pool table, table football and big screen TV for gaming. Adjoining the coffee bar is a stage room featuring a sophisticated lighting and sound system and a wide range of musical instruments, backline equipment and DJ technology. A busy well equipped youth work office completes the venue.
The Sweatbox has a deserved reputation for supporting young musicians offering tuition, rehearsal space and providing a great venue for live music, which attracts young bands and DJ’s from far afield.
On Tuesday and Friday nights the Sweatbox takes over the Academy’s patio area, playing fields and drama studio to offer a changing range of sports, arts and fun activities like the popular Beanbag Cinema, adult pedal karts, portable skate ramps, bouncy gladiator joust, bouncy castle and padded Sumo wrestling.
Thursday evenings we run the unique Beatbox Club which aims to integrate young people with special educational needs and disabilities into the mainstream activities of the Sweatbox. Please see our other entry for Beatbox.
The Sweatbox runs both a Topaz LGBTQI+ group and The Nachos Club for Young Carers.
