Chiltern Music Therapy is an award-winning not-for-profit organisation that provides a music therapy service to people of all ages. Chiltern Music Therapy offers expertise in the fields of learning disabilities, mental health, brain injury, dementia and Alzheimer's, palliative care, neonatal and paediatrics. Our services are available face-to-face or online.

Our Music Therapists are qualified with a Masters in Music Therapy, are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and the national body the British Association for Music Therapy.

We pride ourselves on using evidence based practice and are dedicated to providing measurable and tangible outcomes for all client groups. At the heart of our work is our aim to provide an inclusive service that is accessible to all.

What needs does your service or activity aim to meet for children and young people with SEND and their families?

Music Therapy is a therapeutic intervention using music, which looks at creating change and improvements in communication, physical, social, cognitive and emotional needs.

What outcomes does your service or activity aim to achieve for children and young people with SEND and their families?

At Chiltern Music Therapy we help people with functional needs, such as helping develop skills in cognition, speech and communication or motor skills. We also help people with psychological needs, working on emotional well-being and mental health issues. Music Therapy uses the influence of music to affect specific behaviours and outcomes and is a clinical and evidence-based process, tailored to each individual’s goals.

How can children and young people with SEND and their families start to use your service or activity?

How is your service or activity fully accessible to children, young people with SEND and their families, for example, facilities, support from staff?

Our music therapy service is fully accessible in the community and also on a mobile basis. Our inclusive approach means that no-one is excluded because financial or geographical means.

How do you communicate with children, young people with SEND and their families?

Our evaluative approach means we constantly monitor and assess development and progress in music therapy, and our standardised outcome measures are used alongside parents, teachers, SENCOs and families.

What training have your staff and/or volunteers received to support children and young people with SEND and their families?

Our Music Therapists are:

  • Qualified to a minimum level of a Masters in Music Therapy
  • Registered with and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Registered with the British Association for Music Therapy - DBS (Enhanced) checked
  • Trained in the use of standardised and validated assessment tools and outcome measures for all client groups In addition, many of our team have additional training in Neurologic Music Therapy, Neonatal Intensive Care Music Therapy, Medical Music Therapy and MATADOC (Music Therapy Assessment Tool in Awareness for Disorders of Consciousness).

What future plans does your service or activity have for developing its SEND provision, for example, training, facilities?

Chiltern Music Therapy aims to provide a music therapy provision wherever there is a need across England. All our music therapists are continually undergoing specialist training to further professional development when working with children and young people with additional needs.
