Witney Wolves SEN rugby

The Wolves, an integral part of Witney RFC, are a special needs tag rugby team for boys and girls aged 7 and upwards.

Tag rugby is a safe, fun and exciting variation of non-contact rugby. Players wear belts around their waist and two Velcro tags are attached to each hip. We welcome new faces so come and join us and have some fun at Witney Rugby Club on Sunday mornings 10.00- 11.30 (season September to May).

We have a member base of 30 who attend regularly and who have a range of disabilities from down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and learning difficulties. Witney Wolves cater for all needs and abilities to provide the children with opportunities to grow in confidence, develop social skills, get fit and make friends. We will adapt our way of playing and training to meet any need.

The Wolves are led by a team of 6 volunteer coaches and our Head Coach, Kate Nicholls was a finalist in the Sunday Times Grassroots Sports Personality of the Year in recognition of her work with the Witney Wolves. This team allows us to have a great ratio of coaches to young people which results in more support and greater develpment of skills.

We attend an International  special needs tag rugby tournament every year that has been held in England as well as Ireland. By attending these tournaments we have found the young people gain self esteem, some independence and a sense of value and self worth. In 2019 Witney Wolves were invited to Venice to show the Italian RFU how wonderful rugby can be for special needs youngsters and they have now set up special needs tag rugby all over Italy. Our new initiative is to to grow the number of special needs rugby teams in England as well.

We are continuously raising funds to provide kit for new members and to send the team and their carers to the International Tournament each year and are extremely grateful for all support given. Our secret weapon is the parents and carers of our young people who tirelessly support the Witney Wolves.
