Fortune College is a specialist college for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities aged 16-25.

The college’s Further Education Through Horsemanship (FETH) course offers an educational residential/day programme, working with horses, that prepares young people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible and participate in their local community. The college provides the opportunity to achieve accredited qualifications, develop communication skills, independent living skills, self confidence and skills for working life.

Prospective students:

 ¨         are a minimum of 16 years old when they start the FETH Course and must complete the FETH Course before they are 25 years old

 ¨         have a range of difficulties and disabilities, and a lack of motivation, which, if not addressed will prevent their success in education and in their adult lives

 ¨         are more motivated by horses than by anything else

 ¨         are usually immature school leavers with limited life experience

 ¨         need learning goals related to addressing their inability to relate to others

 ¨         form a compatible student group

 ¨         are not in an acute phase of disorder or regularly and significantly violent or aggressive

 ¨         must have the physical, sensory and intellectual ability to work with horses safely

 must have the mental capacity to indicate understanding to agree with the FETH Course ‘House rules’

 

Other notes

All of our students will have learning needs and mostly hold an EHC plan (they will need this for Local Authority funding). Students have a variety of learning disabilities which include: Autism (about 1/3 in average of our students are on the autistic spectrum), Prader-Willi Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, PTSD, Complex PTSD, Downs Syndrome, Developmental Delay, Attachment Disorder, Speech and Language Difficulties, Selective Mutism, Epilepsy, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Anxiety, Sensory Processing Disorders. However, all our students are individuals, what brings them together is their interest in horses.
