Major proposals for children with special educational needs and disabilities in Oxfordshire

Children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are at the heart of major proposals debated by Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet today, Tuesday 24 May.

Residents have already contributed to plans for this local area SEND strategy through public consultation, which took place between January and March 2022. There were 866 responses with over 90 per cent agreeing with the five strategic objectives. These are:

  • Improving outcomes for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Developing a continuum of local provision to meet the requirements of these children and young people.
  • Good physical and mental health and wellbeing.
  • Improving post-16 education, learning, employment and training opportunities.
  • Facilitating a positive move into adulthood for young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Councillor Liz Brighouse, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Youth Services, said: “In Oxfordshire, organisations that work with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities have a shared ambition that our county will be a place where every young person has the opportunity to become everything they want to be.

“We want children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to receive the very best support at the right time for them. We want them to be able to access suitable education and to achieve their potential by being well prepared for a fulfilling, healthy adult life.”

Detailed plans will now be developed by Oxfordshire County Council and its partners, including Oxfordshire’s NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. Schools, parents, and carers will also be involved in the next steps. The intention is to publish the new strategy in June 2022.
